     Social Media Culture

With rapid development of technology, social media as a means of information transmission is widely used today. The social media influence the public and shape people’s concept about climate change by hyping this issue in an overwhelming scale. When all the media tell a one-sided story, the audience will be misled to believe this is the truth. The documentary The Great Global Warming Swindle (2007) is a good example as social media that tries to change people's thinking about the issue of climate change.

The Great Global Warming Swindle (2007) is a documentary directed by British television director Martin Deken. The film interviewed a number of scientists, with plenty of evidence contradicting to “global climate change caused by humans", saying that it is a biggest scam in contemporary society. The documentary pointed out that the statement of global warming caused by humans is actually fabricated by fanatical environmentalists against industrialization, which becomes a global industry worth more than tens of billions of dollars.

The proponents believe that evidence provided in the film is convincing, and feel that they have been cheated by some scientists and politicians for a long time.

The Great Global Warming Swindle (2007) is very controversial among mainstream media, and the response of the audience varies greatly.
“The Great Warming Swindle Debunked”:
-- Agree :
-- Disagree:

The Great Global Warming Swindle refutes AI Gore's claim about global warming, pointing out that global warming is actually a result of the evolution of the Earth. History shows that the Earth's temperature changes with solar activity and volcanic activities. Therefore, temperature change has nothing to do with human activities.

This lucrative industry is supported by those scientists that try to get research funds with scare stories. These stories are also exaggerated by politicians and the media, and the CO2 global warming theory is developed to limit the development of developing countries. This film covers interviews with up to nine scientists in meteorology, climatology, oceanography, biogeography, paleoclimatology and other sectors. At the end, it draws the conclusion that global warming is actually triggered by increasing solar activity.

If global warming were due to greenhouse gases, the troposphere (the layer of earth’s atmosphere 10–15 km above us) should heat up faster than the surface of Earth, because greenhouse gases there would trap the sun’s rays bouncing off the Earth’s surface, but data from satellites, as well as from weather balloons, does not support this and does not match the theory of climate models. ‘Most observations show a slight decrease in the rate of warming with altitude, so in a sense you can say that the hypothesis of man-made global warming is falsified by the evidence.’”

Solar influence on the Earth might cause the rise of the temperature before 1985," said by Mike Lockwood, a solar physicist at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, "However, these findings are not relevant to any debates about modern climate change. Our results show that the observed rapid rise in global mean temperatures seen after 1985 cannot be ascribed to solar variability, whichever of the mechanisms is invoked and no matter how much the solar variation is amplified."
